Update on the Unrest in Athens from the “Mouth of the Beast” in Greece. Yes, the demonstrations have caught the attention of the mass media. There must be nothing else going on in the world:-) The truth of the matter is that the demonstrations are very localized in Syntagma (Constitution Square), because it is in front of the Greek Parliament and, after the media, that is the primary target audience of the demonstrators. My wife and I arrived in Athens on June 15 on one of the days that a demonstration made the American media's front pages. We went to our hotel, walked around the Acropolis, had a nice dinner... We were completely unaffected as were most citizens of and visitors to Athens, in particular, and the rest of Greece, for sure. Life goes on as usual for them and us. I just had an email from a friend at home today. He lived in Greece in 1974-75. He said, “I’m sure things are fine in Greece. After living there in 1974-75 with all the ‘riots’ in the news back then, I am guessing there's some action down near Syntagma Square and that's about it.” He is exactly correct. The unrest is in a half-square mile area in downtown Athens... period.
Further, we just spent two marvelous weeks in Skiathos for the wedding of our niece. There were 120 guests from all corners of the world, and everyone had a wonderful time. Many enjoyed before/after excursions to other parts of Greece, and no one had any problems. We had one client who was in Olympia during the two day strike, but their guide was still able to take them on a tour of the site from outside the gates... they missed only the museum. None of our other clients traveling at this time have had any difficulties. There have been no cancellations and we continue to take on new bookings in spite of the news.
